Crete
is not just crowded holiday resorts. It still has its remote,
wild places, even on the coast. One is the extreme north-east
tip, a dry jagged peninsula of lonely, vulture-haunted crags,
grey-green bushes and white limestone desert, far from the
tourist crowds. Into this unlikely location developers are
trying to insert several golf-courses, holiday villages
and hotels, on land leased from a venerable but sadly declining
monastery.
